Frequent transfers of district SPs in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, July 23: Transfer of district Superintendents of Police (SPs) has become a frequent occurrence in Jharkhand, with many SPs being transferred within just five to eight months of their appointment. Recent months have seen multiple districts, including Bokaro, Gumla, Deoghar, Ramgarh, and Seraikela, experience changes in SP leadership within short durations. The tenure of SPs in these districts has ranged from five to eight months.

Barring some major districts, SPs in most remain in their positions for only about one to one and a half years. These transfers are often justified in the name of public interest even on face of the fact that the incumbent SPs are performing well. According to information, the Supreme Court mandates that an officer should be posted in a district or any post for a minimum period of two years unless there are serious allegations or complaints of corruption. Despite this ruling, several districts have seen SPs being transferred in less than a year.

SPs Transferred Within Five to Eight Months:

Vimal Kumar took over as SP of Seraikela on July 27, 2023, and was transferred on February 29, 2024 having served for a period of seven months.

Harvinder Singh was appointed as the SP of Gumla on September 10, 2023, and was transferred on February 29, 2024, after six months.

Manish Toppo was made the SP of Seraikela on February 29, 2024, and was transferred on June 30, 2024, after four months.

Priyadarshi Alok was appointed as the SP of Bokaro on July 27, 2023, and was transferred on February 29, 2024, after seven months.

Vimal Kumar became the SP of Ramgarh on February 29, 2024, and was transferred on July 21, 2024, after four months.

Rakesh Ranjan was appointed as the SP of Deoghar on April 4, 2024, and was transferred on June 18, 2024, after just two and a half months.

Deoghar district has faced a similar situation, with three SPs being transferred between April 28, 2020, and April 6, 2022.
