Four students dead and dozens injured in concert stampede at Kochi university

Kochi: In a heartbreaking incident at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), four students lost their lives and over 60 others sustained injuries in a stampede during a concert by singer Nikhita Gandhi. The open-air auditorium of the campus became the site of the tragedy during the university’s annual function.
Health Minister Veena George confirmed the fatalities, stating that the bodies of two young men and two young women were discovered at Kalamassery Medical College. The injured have been swiftly taken to Kalamassery Medical College Hospital and other medical facilities, with arrangements made for their treatment.

The unfortunate turn of events unfolded as students gathered to enjoy Nikita Gandhi’s performance within the university campus. The concert was disrupted by sudden rain, prompting attendees to scramble for shelter. Chaos ensued, resulting in a stampede that led to numerous injuries and the tragic loss of four lives.

Eyewitnesses reported that the stampede occurred as spectators, including local residents, sought refuge from the rain. Though initial reports suggest that only ticket holders were allowed into the program, the situation escalated when rain forced a sudden rush towards the stage.

In response to the calamity, State Health Minister Veena George revealed that four additional students are in critical condition. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief over the students’ deaths and convened an emergency meeting to address the situation. Cultural and art programs scheduled in connection with the ongoing Nav Kerala Sadas program in the northern district have been canceled, and ministers have been directed to coordinate relief efforts on the campus.
