Jamshedpur, April 24: The mortuary deep freezer at MGM Hospital has been non-functional for a month, leading to foul odors emanating from decomposing bodies especially during the summer heat. With both of its six-chambered freezers in operation, the malfunctioning unit’s damaged lock prevented proper cooling, resulting in decomposition within 24 hours.
Currently, 8 bodies are stored in the mortuary, with six in the functional freezer and two in the air-conditioned unit due to the malfunction. The foul smell was causing discomfort to patients and their families in nearby wards.
The defective freezer, acquired under CSR from a company and still under warranty, was pending repair, according to Superintendent Dr. Ravindra Kumar.
