Five elephants electrocuted in Musabani Forest Area near Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur:In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded in the forest of Upperbandha in the Musabani forest area, five elephants, comprising three males and two females, lost their lives after coming into contact with a 33 kV electric wire.

The incident was reported to the authorities promptly, leading to the immediate response of Musabani forest area officials. The team, headed by Ranger Digvijay Singh and assisted by Forest Ranger Sunaram Sabar, along with several dedicated forest personnel, reached the location to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance.

The incident occurred in the Upperbandha forest, where a 33-thousand-volt wire passed just 11 feet above the ground. The Forest Department had recently excavated a trench in the forest, leaving a mound of soil nearby. This negligent act, coupled with the proximity of the high-voltage wire, became the unfortunate catalyst for the tragic event.

Forester Sunaram Sabar, upon reaching the site, confirmed the devastating news. He revealed that all five elephants succumbed to electrocution after coming in contact with a 33 kV electric wire in the potash forest of Upperbandha. The deceased elephants included three males and two females.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the elephants unintentionally came in contact with the high-voltage electric wire, leading to electrocution. The forest, known for its rich biodiversity, has now become the site of this tragic incident, underscoring the delicate balance required between human infrastructure and wildlife conservation efforts.

Upon confirmation of the incident, the forest officials initiated measures to address the immediate impact and ensure the safety of other wildlife in the vicinity. The team is working tirelessly to remove the electric wire and mitigate any potential risks posed to other animals in the area.

The loss of these majestic creatures has deeply saddened the local community and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Elephants play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance, and such incidents highlight the urgent need for enhanced measures to protect wildlife from human-made hazards.

The female elephant, leading a group through the forest, crossed the road where the Forest Department had left the mound of soil. While navigating the earthen mound, the female elephant inadvertently came in contact with the 33-thousand-volt wire passing overhead. The electric shock proved fatal, and tragically, the three juvenile elephants were also in contact with the female, resulting in a chain reaction of electrocution.

The critical factor contributing to this heartbreaking incident is the apparent negligence of the Forest Department. The proximity of the high-voltage wire, just 11 feet above the ground in an area frequented by elephants, highlights a severe lapse in safety measures. The recent excavation and the leftover mound of soil acted as an inadvertent death trap for the unsuspecting elephants passing through the region.
