First bridge since independence to be built on Sutamtandi River

Jamshedpur: In a significant milestone in the history of Gwalkata Panchayat, located in the remote interiors of Potka block, a bridge is set to be constructed on the Sutamtandi river ghat in Shaharjuri village — the first such development since independence. The bridge, to be built under the Chief Minister Gram Setu Yojana at an estimated cost of ₹2.06 crore, comes as a result of the efforts and recommendation of Potka MLA Sanjib  Sardar.

In a celebratory atmosphere on Sunday, MLA laid the foundation stone of the much-awaited bridge in the presence of hundreds of enthusiastic villagers. The community expressed their joy and gratitude by beating traditional drums like dhol, nagada, and mandar, and performing traditional dances to welcome the MLA.

Addressing the gathering, Sardar said, “Gwalkata is one of the most neglected and remote panchayats of Potka block, nestled in the foothills. For decades, it remained outside the fold of development. However, in the last five years under Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s leadership, we have made consistent efforts to bring this region into the mainstream.” He added that several roads have already been repaired and new small bridges constructed in the area before taking up this major project.

The new bridge will directly connect Potka block to Dumria block, significantly easing travel for thousands of villagers. “Children will be able to reach schools easily, and the villagers can now access essential services at the panchayat and block offices without trouble,” Sardar noted.

Villagers hailed the bridge as a turning point in their lives. “For the first time since independence, someone has truly listened to us,” said one villager. The announcement has sparked hope and happiness in the region, with many stating that this development will end their long-standing struggles.

On this occasion, several local leaders and dignitaries were present, including former district council member Hiramani Murmu, panchayat committee member Sitaram Hansda, village head Bhadra Mohan Hembram, block president Sudhir Soren, and secretary Bhubaneshwar Sardar, among others.
