Jamshedpur: Chaos descended on the Jamshedpur Civil court premises for several hours on Saturday after an assailant opened fire at convict Akhilesh Singh.
Two persons were arrested with arms and ammunition while another was injured in on the court premises in what is being seen as a gang war between Akhilesh Singh and supporters of his former rival, late Paramjit Singh.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Amol Venukant Homkar said the trouble began when Akhilesh Singh, who was out on a two month long parole, was being produced in court after surrender. Akhilesh was granted parole to see his ailing father who recently returned from Medanta Hospital after prolonged treatment. His parole ended today following which he was sent back to jail.
Paramjit Singh was killed in Ghagidih Central Jail reportedly by supporters of Akhilesh Singh several years ago. His gang members are seeking to avenge his killing ever since.
As per information, three members of a rival gang arrived on the court premises to kill Singh. One of them tried to open fire on Akhilesh shortly after his alleged aide, a woman, engaged Akhilesh in a conversation on the court premises. The gun did not fire as the bullet got stuck in the barrel. The shooter was immediately caught by Singh’s supporters who thrashed him badly following which he was rushed to Tata Main Hopsital with critical head injuries, police said.
The SSP said two other assailants were arrested with arms. Singh who was serving a life term in connection with the murder of Sakchi jailor about a decade ago, was brought for production in the court in connection with other pending cases.
Police sources said the injured shooter bled profusely after being kicked and stamped by Singh�s supporters in the presence of police personnel and advocates. Senior police officials including SP (city) Kartik S and other police officers reached the court and ordered arresting of Singh�s supporters. The injured assailant was taken to hospital while his aides were taken into custody.
Son of Chandragupt Singh, former general secretary of Jharkhand Police Association, Akhilesh allegedly set up a network of extortionists and shooters in the city and beyond. The 36-year-old don stepped into the crime world after he was accused of abducting city businessman Om Prakash Kabra on July 21, 2001. He was sentenced for life in Jailor Uma Shankar Pandey murder case.
Meanwhile, police has launched a hunt to apprehend other culprits, who managed to escape from the court premises during the attack. Senior police officials reached the spot and restored order following which the court functioned normally.
