Giridih: A 25-year-old married rape victim from a village in Birni burnt herself by sprinkling kerosene oil in her parents’ house late on the night of September 23 due to fear of public condemnation. She died during treatment at Bokaro General Hospital on Wednesday.
The police handed over the body to the relatives after post-mortem. With the help of the villagers, the dead body was buried on Wednesday night itself. The married woman’s father lodged an FIR in this regard at Birni police station.
She alleged that Niaz Ansari, son of Mustaqeem Ansari, resident of Dalangi of Birni police station area, had taken his daughter at around 5 pm on September 21. The daughter’s in-laws house is in Chalkusa police station area of Hazaribagh district.
Saying that his mother was unwell, he took her on a bike to a secluded place in Birni. There he raped her at knifepoint and ran away leaving her at midnight. The daughter somehow reached her parents’ home. She started shouting loudly outside the door.
When relatives and neighbours heard her shouts, they came out and saw him in a delirious state. The daughter tried to tell about the incident while crying, but fainted. When she regained consciousness after some time, she told them the whole story.
On September 22, relatives took him to his in-laws’ house. The daughter informed her in-laws and villagers about the incident. When the villagers talked to the accused on phone, he said that he would get married. The in-laws and villagers forcibly made the daughter sign a paper.
Her father told that when he reached Dalangi at the accused’s house on the morning of September 23, he was absconding. So, he informed his relatives and the villagers. His relative said that a concrete decision will be taken after talks on September 24 when Niaz returns home. From there the daughter reached her maternal home and at midnight sprinkled kerosene and set herself on fire.
The woman was married eight years ago according to Muslim customs and had good relations with her in-laws. She has two sons and her husband is in Mumbai. Police station in-charge Mrityunjay Singh said that they are searching for the accused.
