Enrollment at Ghatshila College amid seat reduction concerns

Mail News Service

Ghatshila, May 12: The enrollment process for the Intermediate Academic Session 2024-26 commenced at Ghatshila College, offering courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce. Prospective students can obtain the prospectus from the enrollment counter, with the deadline for form submission set for May 20. The college management has slated May 30 for the release of the merit list and subsequent admissions.

However, concerns have arisen due to a significant reduction in seats allocated by the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC). Previously, 1152 seats in Arts, 640 in Science, and 640 in Commerce were allotted to Ghatshila College. This year, JAC has reduced the total seats to 384 across all faculties for all affiliated colleges in the state.

Dr. RK Chaudhary, the Principal, voiced apprehension over the financial implications of this decision. In a letter to JAC, Dr. Chaudhary highlighted that government grants for running intermediate classes in affiliated colleges were not allocated. The salaries of teachers and staff relied solely on enrollment fees, leading to an estimated budgetary loss of approximately Rs 10 lakh due to seat reduction.

Despite Dr. Chaudhary’s appeal for permission to enroll students beyond the prescribed limit, JAC has reaffirmed its stance, denying any increase in seats. This decision posed financial challenges, making it difficult to ensure full salaries for teachers and employees, thereby impacting the quality of education provided.

Dr. Chaudhary expressed concern over the impending financial strain, underscoring the need for a solution to mitigate the impact on the college’s operations.
