Jamshedpur, Sept: Eminent socialist, Gandhian and labour leader LN Sahay passed away at his Adityapur residence at 1:30 on Monday afternoon. He was 97 years old. The Gandhi Shanti Prathisthan of Jamshedpur described Sahay�s death as the end of an era of political labour oriented activity. Among those who offered condolences included Alok Kumar, SC Jha, Kumar Dilip, Ankit, Ajay Sharma, Avinash Kumar, Nishant Akhilesh and Arvind Anjum.

Hailing from Ranipur in Patna, for LN Sahay Singhbhum was his domain of political and socialist pursuits. He participated in the national uprising of 1942 for which he had to serve a jail term in Patna Camp but was released shortly on grounds of his young age. Later he joined Tata Steel (then TISCO Ltd) as a C-Class apprentice. His political activities got a fillip after coming to Jamshedpur. His coming in contact with Jai Prakash Narayan and Makhan Mukherjee made him join the freedom and the socialist movements. He propagated the fundamentals of socialism among the working class people in association with Vagaram Tulpule, Munshi Ahmaduddin, Basawan Singh and Ramanand Tiwary.

LN Sahay lost his job for taking a leading role in the workers� movement. After being unemployed for several months he was taken back in his job. He was the executive president of Ispat Mazdoor Panchayat founded by Ramanand Tiwary. He was a member of the wage fixation committee of steel workers NJCS for many years. Mourners observed that with LN Sahay�s death, an era in the history of socialism and labour movement had come to an end.
