Jamshedpur, Jun 26: An elephant created havoc for eight hours leaving a tribal women dead while injuring two others at Matladih Village of Somai jhopri under Baghbera Police Station on Sunday.
The elephant struck early morning at around 3 am and continued the mayhem for eight hours.
The elephant attacked a house and killed 50-year-old Zema Bankira and wounded her husband Rajaram Bankira while they were sleeping on a cot in the wee hours, a police official said.
Rajaram was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was provided first aid.
Earlier the pachyderm, which entered the village from Rajnagar in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district, attacked the house of one Sukra Hembram and damaged it, he said.
Later, forest department officials reached the spot and police along with villagers drove the elephant into a nearby jungle.
Forest department official immediately provided Rs 25 000 as compensation. Baghbera Inspector Jitendra Kumar Thakur reached the incident spot and removed the crowd which had gathered to see the elephant.
