Jamshedpur, April 17: Baurichua village farmer, 55 year old Manik Kisku who had gone to irrigate his crop field with a motor pump at 2 am today morning was killed by an elephant. According to reports, Manik Kisku was wrapped by the elephant in its trunk and flung at a distance. Manik reportedly died on the spot. The victim�s nephew, Lodan Kisku who had gone in search of his uncle found him lying in his field. Manik was taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Baharagora early in the morning where the Medical Officer In-charge, Dr OP Chowdhary pronounced him dead.
Baurichua Tola is in Saldaha village under Baharagora police station of Ghatshila Subdivision.
Manik�s wife broke down inconsolably when she learnt about her husband�s death. The couple�s daughter, the only child, is married.
Immediately on receipt of information, Baharagora MLA Samir Mahanty, Assistant Forest Conservator-cum-Ranger Ashok Kumar Singh, Forest Officer Buddhdev, Forest guards Dipak Mahto and Akash Sarangi arrived at the Baharagora CHC.
Samir Mahanty said that wild elephants had created panic in his Assembly constituency. He said that he would take up the issue in the Jharkhand Assembly and urge for protective measures to be strengthened to ensure that wild elephants did not enter the villages and destroy life and property of the people. The Ranger said that elephants enter villages from the bordering forests of Bengal. all forest areas have been equipped with crackers, mobil oil and flame torches to chase away wild elephant herds into the forests.
The Ranger stated that as per government provision, the deceased�s family was eligible for compensation of Rs Four lakh. An advance amount of Rs 25, 000 was handed over to the family through MLA Samir Mahanty. The balance amount, according to the Ranger would be paid after filing the relevant forms. The legislator also provided financial aid to the bereaved family. Barshole police station ASI Sashi Bhushan Rai arrived at the hospital and after preliminary enquiries sent the body for autopsy.
