Jamshedpur: The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Wildlife, Kulwant Singh, has voiced strong displeasure over the tragic death of seven elephants in East Singhbhum district. Labeling the incidents as a serious crime, Singh has declared that the responsible officials from the electricity department will not escape accountability.
The elephants’ demise is attributed to the negligence of the electricity department, which failed to adhere to the prescribed height guidelines for electric wires, according to Singh. He highlighted that the Government of India has clear guidelines on wire height, and discrepancies in this regard have been noted in various locations across the district. Under the Wildlife Act, legal action has been initiated against the culpable officials of the electricity department, and additional measures are underway.
The PCCF Wildlife has submitted a comprehensive list of locations where corrective measures are required to the Electricity Department. This move comes in the wake of mounting concerns about the safety of wildlife and the need for swift action to prevent further loss of precious elephant lives. The tragic incidents have sparked a renewed call for cooperation between wildlife conservation authorities and relevant departments to ensure the well-being of elephants and other wildlife in the region.
