Elderly man crushed to death by elephant near Jamshedpur

Gurabanda, March 27: Dhirai Murmu (64), a resident of Pokharia Joteyashol in the Jharpokharia police station area of Odisha, was crushed to death by a wild elephant in Mutkamkocha Block on Tuesday evening. According to reports, Dhirai was visiting relatives in Mutkamkocha when the incident occurred. While on his way to the pond, Murmu was attacked by the elephant. Despite efforts by bystanders to scare away the animal, Murmu sustained serious injuries. However, due to poor road conditions, an ambulance attempting to transport him to the hospital had to turn back from about two kilometers away. Murmu succumbed to his injuries at home four hours after the attack. The forest department was promptly notified, and officials arrived at the scene the following morning. The body has been sent for postmortem examination. Meanwhile, the family of the deceased received an initial compensation of Rs 25,000, with assurances from forest department personnel that a total compensation of Rs 4 lakh would be provided. Various officials, including members of the Forest and Environment Protection Committee and local police authorities, were present at the scene to supervise the situation.
