Jamshedpur, Dec. 5: Amidst fervour of the panchayat polls a bomb like object exploded at Surabera village in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district injuring eight children , one of them seriously, on Saturday.

District superintendent of police Inderjeet Mahatha said that the children picked up the “bomb-like” object hidden in a tank and started playing with it when the explosion took place.

As the news spread, Mahatha rushed to the spot along with the bomb disposal squad members. Later, it was discovered that the explosion occurred from a “sutli bomb” (a fire-cracker of high intensity).

All the injured were rushed to the nearby hospital, while the seriously injured was referred to Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur.

Investigation was on, Mahatha said, making it clear that the incident has nothing to do with the third phase of the four-phase panchayat poll in the state today.

Sources informed that the incident took place about a km away from a polling booth in Kuchai.
