Dumri by-election 2023: AIMIM to imptrss as Muslim voters unitedly voted for JMM

Jamshedpur: After West Bengal and Karnataka, Muslims did not let their votes get scattered even in the by-election held in Dumbri, Jharkhand. The entire community together expressed confidence in Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and failed the Owaisi factor. Despite the large population of Muslims in Dumri, the AIMIM candidate got only 3,471 votes, which is less than NOTA.
Whereas if we look at the figures of the Assembly elections held in the year 2019, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate Abdul Mobin Rizvi got 2,4132 votes. But, this time Muslims voted outright for JMM candidate Bebi Devi. Due to the death of Jagarnath, Bebi got public sympathy. This is the reason why despite getting the support of BJP, AJSU’s Yashoda Devi lost the election.
Experts say that now Muslim voters have understood that if they want to defeat BJP, they have to vote for such a party which can defeat it. The same pattern was also seen in Mandar by-election in Jharkhand. When AIMIM candidate Devkumar Dhan was limited to only 22303 votes in the 2022 by-elections. Bandhu Tirkey’s daughter Shilpa Neha Tirkey had won from Congress. Whereas in 2019, Dhan got 69364 votes as JVM candidate.
In Dumri Assembly by-election, I.N.D.I.A alliance candidate Baby Devi has won with a huge vote. Her nearest rival NDA candidate Yashoda Devi got 1,00,231 votes and AJSU’s Yashoda Devi got 83,075 votes. AIMIM candidate got 3,471 votes. Independent candidate Kamal Prasad Sahu got 712 votes. Independent candidate Narayan Giri got 610 votes. Independent candidate Roshal Lal Turi got 1898 votes. Whereas NOTA remained 3649. Late Jagarnath Mahato had won this seat for 4 consecutive times, maintaining which his wife Baby Devi put this seat in JMM’s bag for the 5th time.
5 main reasons for JMM’s victory
• Muslim voters supported JMM after failing the Owaisi factor.
• The constituent parties of I.N.D.I.A remained united, in 2019 JDU and CPI also contested the elections.
• BJP’s entire vote bank could not be transferred to AJSU.
• This time there were only 6 candidates in the electoral fray, whereas in the last election there were 16 candidates.
• Jagarnath Mahato’s death brought sympathy to his wife Bebi Devi.
After winning the Dumri Assembly seat for the fifth time, Bebi Devi expressed happiness and called it a victory of the people. He said, ‘Completing the incomplete works of late Jagarnath Mahato is his first priority.’ Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said, ‘Dumri’s victory is the beginning of 2024 elections. The people have decided that only democracy will prevail in Jharkhand, not plutocracy. It is now certain that NDA’s arrogance will end in the state.
