DPS Jamshedpur students visit CSIR-NML to observe R&D activities

Jamshedpur, July 8: A batch of 35 students of Std. XII from Delhi Public School (DPS) Jamshedpur, accompanied by their teacher Prabhat Kumar visited the CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur on Friday and interacted with the scientists and research scholars under the aegis of School- NML Interactive Program (SNIP) and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Jharkhand state chapter.

The common objective of CSIR-NML and NASI has been to motivate young science students for scientific and technological research.

The program was scheduled for three hours, which comprised an overview of Indian science and technology, documentary film show on CSIR and NML separately, visit to NML Museum/ Archive and selective units of the laboratory to have an exposure of modern laboratory research environment.

Dr. N. G. Goswami, advisor management, NML and Dr. Arvind Sinha, chief scientist, NML, and chairman, Jharkhand Chapter of NASI, briefed about the program and gave an overview of CSIR and NASI�s contributions in different branches of science and technology. They defined science, science and technology, development of science and technology in Indian perspectives.

Dr. P. N. Mishra, principal scientist introduced the program and also extended his cooperation during the interactive session and arrange to lab visit. During the session, students expressed their views on science, asked numbers of questions, and clarify their doubt s while interacting with scientists of the lab.

“I came to know about many new aspects of science and technology which I barely knew earlier”, said Kritika Jha, a student of XII after the laboratory visit. Ishan and Shubhbham Maheswari were impressed to see the cleanness of the laboratory.

The students expressed their excitement and happiness over the laboratory visit as well as interaction with the scientists and research scholars. In fact, they were thrilled while visiting the labs and looking at the practical setups like �creep testing� facilities, electronic waste lab and mechanical testing lab.

Apurva Raj expressed that the lab visit was helpful in improving the thought processes and he expressed to pursue research in CSIR.

Anshuman Sinha, said, “The visit to the laboratory helped me to know in depth about different types of ores, minerals, metals, rocks, and how they are extracted and used”.

Another student, Suhubham Das said, “We are thrilled to know about CSIR lab’s contribution in the introduction of the testing of contaminated water and specially removal of arsenic.

During the interactive session at the CSIR-NML museum, number of students asked different questions on minerals, ores, origin of coal, the evolutionary history behind the formation of metals, etc. The contribution of CSIR-NML was demonstrated at museum with the help of wall mounted historical photographs, metals products and a sample of ores, minerals, and metals.

Most of the students said that the interaction was very informative and brought a lot of motivation. Teachers and many students requested for their next visit to the lab for a deeper knowledge.

The teacher expressed their view and satisfied to know about the consistent effort and research emphasis in various sectors for the ultimate development of India.
