According to information, the gunshot passed through his left armpit and got stuck behind the lungs. The pellet is yet to be taken out.

Amit Kumar, the accused, was arrested for the crime and his pistol was seized. The police also sealed the classroom.

According to police, Amit Kumar was showing two country-made pistols he had brought to the school to his friend sitting next to him ahead of the school assembly hour this morning.

Suddenly, one of the fire arms went off accidentally, DSP (City), Animesh Naithany said.

The incident took place at classroom on first floor of Dayanand Public School (DPS) at about 7.30 a.m., few minutes before the school assembly.

After firing the shot, the accused student, who is also a Class XI in science stream like the victim Sudhanshu, came out of the classroom and subsequently walked briskly to flee the spot.

“It is really a shocking incident. The accused student had already gone out of the school premises and had started running, but a school guard, Gyan Singh, who was at the school gate, chased the student and caught him,” said Swarna Mishra, principal of the school.

The principal said that soon the accused student was brought to the school campus and his bag was examined. “We are shocked to see two pistols in the bag.

Soon we informed the Sakchi police, and next moment the accused student was arrested and taken to Sakchi police station,” said the principal while talking to the media.

As the news spread, father of the injured student, Devendra Kumar Gupta rushed to the hospital. Located in the heart of the city Dayanand Public School is an ICSE school run by Arya Samaj, a social outfit.

Officer in-charge of Sakchi police station, Anjani Kumar Tiwary said they recovered two pistols from the school bag of the accused student.

“We are investigating the incident. One pistol was a `katta’ (country-made pistol) and another one was 7.65 mm pistol.  The shot was fired from the 7.65 mm pistol.  In the pistol’s magazine there were three bullets left,” said Tiwary.

The officer in-charge said the accused student claimed there was a misfire while he was showing Sudhanshu the pistol and there was no intention of shooting him.

The injured student’s father Devendra Kumar Gupta, who had talked to his son, said that Sudhanshu was shot at intentionally by his classmate.

“I am really shocked I spoke to my son at Tata Main Hospital.  On being asked, Sudhanshu said his classmate shot him intentionally.  But my son could not give any reason behind the firing,” Devendra noted.

The school principal, however, claimed that it was an accident. “The accused brought the fire-arms to the classroom and was showing him the gun as it went off.  Both of them are residents of Mango and there are very good friends,” claimed the principal.

Sakchi police OC said that they are yet to establish whether the accused student had intentionally fired the shot or it was an accidental case.

Sources at TMH said the student, Sudhanshu Kumar, is still in a serious condition.
