Jamshedpur: A public awareness team led by the DPRO of East Singhbhum Sanjay Kumar today visited the office of Vegetable Vendors Association at Sakchi vegetable market to seek support of vendors.

He apprised the vendors about the hazards of using polythene and appealed to them to not give polythenes to customers.

The vendors were asked to request and encourage customers to use bags made of jute and cloth instead.

Many vendors came up with innovative ideas to encourage use of jute and cloth bags and discourage the demand for plastic bags by customers. One of them, Lalan Prasad suggested that a discount of 5 per cent will be given to customers shopping with jute bags.

Another vendor Shakti Sao, supported by Mithun and Jaladhar Mahato, fellow vendors, said they will charge Rs 2 extra from customers demanding polythene bags.

Some of the vendors said they were forced to keep polythene bags on the demand of customers. They demanded that large entry gates and banners and with appeal to people for not using polythene bags should be put up at marketplaces in the city to create awareness.
