Documentary ‘To Kill a Tiger’ nominated for Oscar 2024, sheds light on Jharkhand Gang Rape Case

Mumbai: In a remarkable turn of events, the documentary “To Kill a Tiger,” directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, has secured a spot in the race for the Oscar 2024 in the documentary feature film category. The compelling film, featuring renowned actors Dev Patel, Mindly Kelling, and poet Rupi Kaur, delves into the harrowing story of a 13-year-old girl in Jharkhand who became a victim of gang rape.

Pahuja, an Indian-origin Canadian citizen with roots in Jharkhand, skillfully portrays the family’s uphill battle for justice in the face of societal resistance. The film unveils the painful journey of the young girl’s parents, played by Patel and Kelling, as they confront the challenges and prejudices prevailing in their village.

The storyline unfolds as the parents strive to seek justice for their daughter, who becomes a victim not only of a heinous crime but also of societal apathy. Despite facing opposition from the villagers, who attempt to silence the matter by blaming the victim, the parents remain resolute in their pursuit of justice.
Notably, the documentary captures the rare courage displayed by the family, portrayed by Patel, Kelling, and Kaur, in standing up against the prevailing norms and fighting for justice instead of succumbing to societal shame. Pahuja reflects on the difficulty of making such a film but emphasizes the bravery exhibited by the characters, particularly Ranjit and his family, which served as an inspiration for the entire filmmaking team.
The nomination of “To Kill a Tiger” for the Oscar 2024 brings attention not only to the exceptional filmmaking by Nisha Pahuja but also to the critical social issues addressed in the documentary. As the film competes for the prestigious award, it shines a spotlight on the need for conversations around justice, resilience, and societal change.
