Jamshedpur, Oct 9: As per the DLC directives, Tata Motors has to provide permanent placement to 3,500 temporary employees at the Company’s Jamshedpur plant. This was stated by Advocate Akhilesh Srivastava who filed the case. He said that it was upto the Tata Motors management to either comply with the DLC’s order of providing jobs to 3,500 temporary workers or challenge the order in higher courts.
According to sources, the Tata Motors management was working on facts and figures to come to terms with the order. Calculations made thus far revealed that there were approximately 2,600 temporary employees at Tata Motors’ Jamshedpur plant who needed to be permanently placed.
A meeting was held between Tata Motors management and the TM Employees’ Union on Monday to discuss the placement issue.
The meeting included detailed discussions on modes to resolve the issue on compliance of the DLC’s directives with minimum expenditure accruing to the Company. However, neither the management nor the union was willing to concede any ground. The management contended that permanent placement was already being given annually and under this practice, the pace of such permanent placement could be enhanced. A roadmap for permanent placement was being worked out so that a way could be worked out at the union level.
Based on the calculations made so far, it had been determined that the permanent placement would involve 2,600 temporary employees. After their permanent placement, the chapter on temporary laborers will close.
Discussions were also held on execution of the permanent placement order either collectively or through alternate methods.
