District police to revamp of traffic system in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: The traffic police have started taking steps to revamp the traffic set-up in  steel city. In order to make roads safer for commuters and make them adhere to traffic rules,  the traffic police has not only decided to increase the traffic constables and traffic posts, but also set up additional traffic signal posts shortly.

Babban Singh, the deputy superintendent of police (Traffic) said that they have chalked out plans to revamp vehicular traffic system to make it people-friendly.

” As per the plans the important roads, exit or entry points and strategic locations will have to be equipped with sign-boards of No Entry, No Parking and rates of penalties, something which is nowhere to be seen in the steel city.  Sign-boards are installed at the strategic points, the vehicle riders will follow them and will tend to make no violation in the traffic rules,” said Singh.

The new traffic DSP said that he came to know about how the vehicle riders have to face difficulties without the necessary sign-board when he dealt with a case involving a car-owner coming from Bengal recently.

“”We have carried a study of the traffic system. We have decided to set up additional traffic posts.  We have also decided to send a requisition for appointing additional traffic constables in addition to the existing traffic constable strength of 109.  Once these additional traffic cops will join the department, then we will be able to manage the vehicular traffic in the way the city does need,” said another official.

“Traffic management is one of the biggest challenges these days. We have pondered on problem areas of traffic identified under short term strategies that will be dealt immediately and the result will be seen on the roads within two months,” said another official.

The department has identified prosecution against violation of no-entry restrictions by heavy commercial vehicles, crackdown on public mode of transport, and auto-rickshaws stopping in the middle of busy arteries to pick up passengers, drunken driving/rash driving, drive for use of helmets and crackdown on overloading school van.

“The sole purpose behind seeking cooperation from the public is to ensure free movement of vehicles. The onus lies on the people too, who should practice traffic rules while plying vehicles on the busy roads,” said an official.

Sources in the traffic department pointed out that besides increasing the strength of traffic cops and traffic posts and also increasing the traffic signal posts, the department has also decided to induct equipment like speed limit radar (SLR), an electronic hand-held equipment to gauge the speed of any vehicles.
