Ranchi, June 20: Disappointed with BJP, former Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jamshedpur and inspector general of police in Dumka Arun Oraon joined Congress party in Ranchi on Friday, June 20.
Arun the 1992 batch Punjab cadre IPS officer joined the party in presence of Jharkhand State congress President Sukhdev Bhagat and other senior leaders.
Earlier in 2014, just before the Lok Sabha election Arun Oroan after taking retirement from police service joined BJP and wanted to contest polls from the state in the ongoing Modi wave but the internal protest among the party declined him a chance of getting a ticket.
Again in November-December 2015 ahead of Jharkhand Assembly elections he had chance of fighting the polls which wasn’t to be. After a long wait he finally joined the Congress. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) with the due consent of party president Sonia Gandhi approved Oraon’s application earlier in the month.
A graduate from Ranchi’s St Xavier’s College, Oraon completed his MBBS from the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) before he cracked the UPSC.
He took voluntary retirement in 2014 to join politics. Sukhdeo Bhagat welcomed Oraon into the party. The officer, husband of former HRD Minister of Jharkhand Geetashree Oraon comes from a political background.
His father Bandi Oraon has been an MLA, his father-in-law late Kartik Oraon had served in Indira Gandhi cabinet and mother in-law late Sumati Oraon had been an MP. At the event Professor at Ranchi University, Dr. Prakash Verma also joined congress.
