Ranchi: The Jharkhand assembly today witnessed a rare unity among the ruling and the opposition in election of new speaker of the house.
Sisai MLA and BJP leader Dinesh Oraon was unanimously elected speaker of the assembly. No other candidate from any other party put forth applications for the said post that cleared the way for Oraon to become the new speaker.
On the other hand the legislators who had left out on first day of the session on January 6 were administrated the oath today.
Those who took the oath were Sadhu Charan Mahato and Dhullu Mahato of BJP, Enos Ekka of Jharkhand Party and Shiv Pujan Mehta of Bahujan Samaj Party. After administering the oath the Protem Speaker Prof Stephen Marandi informed the house that five sets of nomination papers had been submitted for the post of assembly speaker.
Thereafter, on the directive of Prof Stephen Marandi the chief minister Raghuvar Das proposed the name of Dinesh Oraon for speakers post on the floor of the house.
Louis Marandi supported the proposal, and Prof Stephen Marandi announced the name of Dinesh Oraon as speaker amid thunderous applaud from the benches. After his name was announced Raghuvar Das and leader of the JMM legislators group Hemant Soren directed Oraon to his seat.
Dinesh Oraon while addressing the house said he was overwhelmed by the responsibility entrusted on him to run the assembly. I feel a greater responsibility today as members cutting across political affiliations extended their support to me.
Through them I am honored to receive support and faith of Crores of people of Jharkhand, which will give me a great strength to run the house, the speaker said.
Oraon expressed the hope that he would not face any hurdle to run the house with the support the ruling party members and the opposition, adding he would be able to uphold the dignity of the house.
The speaker thereafter thanked every member of the house and suspended the session till 11 am on January 8.
