Jamshedpur: Jharkhand Diabetes Forum will organise ‘ Walkathlon-2013’ to mark World Diabetes Day on November 14. Secretary of the forum, A K Paul said here today that people have been invited from various walks of life to participate in the event which will be flagged off from the Centre for Excellence in Bistupur.
The forum will also organise a free blood sugar check-up camp at the venue. For creating awareness about the disease the forum will also organise a symposium on diabetes at Hotel Dayal International on November 16. Experts on diabetes from Calcutta, Dhanbad and Patna will attend the symposium.
Advocating spread of awareness to prevent diabetes, he suggested doctors and other forums to inspire people, especially young, to take care of their health “before it is too late”.
Another functionary of the forum said that diabetes is definitely on a rise in Jamshedpur with approximately 50 to 60 new cases of diabetes diagnosed every day.
There are three main reasons that, coupled with heredity, precipitate the onset of diabetes – increasing consumption of fast food and junk food, lack of awareness about the disease and increasing phenomena of living in a stressful environment.
He noted that for prevention, especially for those with a family history of the disease, people need to be aware of its effects. Proper diet, regular exercise, de-stressing activities like meditation and yoga and regular check-up is necessary.
