Dhalbhumgarh Airport Update: Jamshedpur to Get Flight Access in 90 Minutes

Jamshedpur: The long-awaited Dhalbhumgarh Airport project has cleared its primary administrative and environmental hurdles. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is set to launch Phase 1 of construction across 100 hectares of land.

The breakthrough came following a high-level review meeting at the Mango Guest House on Saturday, attended by Jamshedpur Member of Parliament (MP) Bidyut Baran Mahato, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Saba Alam Ansari, and regional forest rangers.

Environmental Clearance Fast-Tracked

DFO Saba Alam Ansari confirmed that a comprehensive land and environmental assessment report for the 100-hectare Phase 1 zone has been finalized and dispatched to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in New Delhi. Once the Ministry grants its official clearance, the report will be forwarded to the AAI headquarters to greenlight immediate construction.

Addressing previous environmental gridlocks, MP Bidyut Baran Mahato clarified that a high-level expert team from the Ministry of Civil Aviation recently surveyed the site and confirmed that no major trees will be felled during the first phase.

“An error in an earlier survey misclassified bamboo plants as trees, stalling the project,” Mahato explained. “Under official government regulations, bamboo is classified as ‘grass,’ meaning it can legally be cleared or relocated without violating strict forest conservation laws.”

Economic Windfall and Urban Expansion

Located just 55 kilometres from Jamshedpur, the Dhalbhumgarh Airport is expected to become a massive economic engine for the region. The MP projected that the project will generate hundreds of permanent government jobs and create approximately 75,000 temporary and indirect employment opportunities.

Local authorities envision the development of a brand-new industrial and residential satellite township along the Jamshedpur-Dhalbhumgarh corridor, significantly elevating the standard of living for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Land Allocation & Infrastructure Breakdown

Phase 1 utilizes a total of 100 hectares, consisting primarily of categorized forest areas and minor tracts of government land distributed across five local villages:

Village Name Forest Land (Hectares) Government Land (Hectares)
Devshol 3.320 0.126
Kokpara 41.327 0.259
Ruasol 0.065 0.020
Burudih 38.336 0.000
Charchakka 13.713 0.000

Airport Layout Specifications:

  • Operational Area: 90.429 hectares
  • Proposed Runway: 5.216 hectares
  • Apron Zone: 0.942 hectares
  • Terminal Building: 0.140 hectares
  • Fire Station: 0.036 hectares

Inter-State Benefits: Tri-Border Connectivity

Jamshedpur stands as one of India’s premier industrial hubs, yet travelers currently face a 2.30 hour road journey to reach Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi for domestic flights. The operationalization of Dhalbhumgarh Airport will slash travel time down to just 1 hour from the steel city.

According to the AAI, the airport’s strategic location will serve as a commercial lifeline across three states:

  • Jharkhand: Direct access for Jamshedpur, Adityapur, Ghatshila, Chaibasa, Chakradharpur, Saraikela, Musabani, Potka, and Baharagora.
  • Odisha: Seamless connectivity for bordering districts, including Baripada and Rairangpur.
  • West Bengal: Easy transit access for residents of Purulia and Jhargram districts.
