Depression leads to showers, Jamshedpur records 22 mm of rain

Jamshedpur : Several places in Kolhan experienced light showers during the past 24 hours with Ghatshila in East Singhbhum district topping the rain-o-meter with 52 mm. Chandil in adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district recorded around 45 mm of rain.

The IMD observatory at Jamshedpur recorded 22 mm of rain from 8.30 am on Thursday to 8.30 am on Friday. Places like Jamtara, Ranchi, Latehar, Dumka and Tenughat in Bokaro recorded around 10 mm of rain.

Overcast condition prevailed in many parts of southern and central Jharkhand today due to the impact of the depression. Intermittent rains was continuing in Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas at the time of filing the report this afternoon.

According to the weatherman, the depression pulled the monsoon trough which had moved northerly towards the foothills of Himalayas. ” Monsoon became active in Jharkhand due to the depression,” he said.

Statistics revealed that so far after the onset of monsoon in June, Jharkhand has actually received 775.4 mm of rain against a normal of 1030.6 mm, a deficit of 25 per cent. Met officials said the monsoon flow was activated in Jharkhand after the formation of the low-pressure area over Gangetic Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal which later converted into a depression resulting in widespread and heavy rain.

Local meteorologist said the Depression over northwest Jharkhand and neighbourhood moved slightly west northwestwards and has weakened into a well marked low pressure area today. ” An associated cyclonic circulation wa also extending upto 7.6 Km above mean sea level tilting southwards,” he said.
