Jamshedpur, April 22 : A routine anti-encroachment drive in the Tatanagar area’s Gudri Market took an unexpected turn on Wednesday when authorities halted the demolition of a shop at the final moment following a legal claim by its owner.
The Railway Engineering Department, accompanied by Magistrate Sudeepto Roy, deputed by the district administration, and a substantial police force, had reached the site to carry out eviction proceedings.

The action targeted a shop named “Shri Laxmi Bhandar,” operated by local businessman Murari Lal Agrawal, popularly known as Murari Seth.
As officials prepared to demolish the structure, the shop owner strongly objected and informed the administration that he had already filed a petition before the Jharkhand High Court, which had been admitted for hearing. He requested 15 days’ time to obtain a stay order from the court, assuring authorities that failure to do so within the stipulated period would allow the Railways to proceed with demolition without resistance.
Taking cognizance of the pending legal matter, officials held an on-the-spot discussion and decided to temporarily suspend the action.

Magistrate Sudeepto Roy directed the shop owner to submit an affidavit at the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) office, clearly stating that if no stay order is secured within 15 days, the Railway authorities would be free to resume demolition without obstruction.
He further clarified that subsequent action would depend on the affidavit and the High Court’s directives.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion across Gudri Market, with local traders debating whether similar relief would be extended to other encroachers or if the administration would continue its drive with strict enforcement.
Sources indicate that the Railway’s anti-encroachment campaign will continue, targeting illegal occupations on its land as per established rules. The administration has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all actions are carried out within the legal framework, balancing enforcement with due judicial process.
For now, the Gudri Market episode has ignited a broader debate—highlighting the delicate balance between upholding the law and allowing affected individuals the opportunity to seek legal recourse.
