New Delhi (IANS): The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested an absconding accused in a kidnapping-cum-murder case registered in Jharkhand’s Sahibganj district, cracking a sensational case through coordinated efforts with the Jharkhand Police.
Police registered a complaint at Borio Police Station in Sahibganj on May 21 after Champai Marandi went missing under suspicious circumstances. Investigators later recovered his body from a forest area nearly 10 days after the alleged murder, prompting them to add murder charges to the case.
During the investigation, police found that the victim was last seen consuming liquor with the accused, Sukhdev Murmu. Investigators alleged that after killing him, the accused concealed the body in a jungle and fled the village to evade arrest. Sukhdev Murmu alias Tala is a resident of Borio in Sahibganj district. According to investigators, he works as a farm labourer and is allegedly addicted to alcohol.
The breakthrough came when Head Constable Gaurav of the Delhi Police Crime Branch received specific information about the whereabouts of one of the accused, identified as Sukhdev Murmu. The informer claimed that Sukhdev had confessed his involvement in the crime to some individuals while staying near Hanuman Mandir in Delhi’s Yamuna Bazar area.
Delhi Police shared the information with the Borio Police Station and verified the details. Sub-Inspector Rohit of Borio Police confirmed the kidnapping case and informed Delhi Police that investigators had added murder charges after recovering the victim’s body. He also confirmed that the accused had been absconding since the crime.
Acting on the tip-off, the Crime Branch team conducted surveillance around Hanuman Mandir and laid a trap. Officers apprehended Sukhdev Murmu at around 11 a.m. on May 24.
During interrogation, Sukhdev allegedly revealed that he, along with co-accused Babuji Marandi and Mangal Tudu, had consumed liquor with Champai Marandi on May 12. Police said an argument broke out during the gathering, after which the co-accused allegedly strangled Champai while Sukhdev assisted in the crime.
A Crime Branch team led by Inspector Vinay Kumar carried out the operation under the supervision of ACP Satendra Mohan and other senior officers.
Following the arrest, Delhi Police informed the Jharkhand Police. A team from Jharkhand subsequently reached Delhi and secured the accused’s transit remand from a local court.
