Deep tech, engineering excellence will drive India’s future: Tata Steel Growth Shop GM Sharad Sharma

IEI Jamshedpur celebrates 58th Engineers’ Day honoring Sir M. Visvesvaraya

Jamshedpur, Sept 15: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jamshedpur Local Centre, celebrated the 58th Engineers’ Day at its premises on Monday evening. The occasion also marked the 164th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, India’s most eminent engineer, in whose honour the day is observed every year.

The program began with the garlanding of Sir Visvesvaraya’s statue by the chief guest, Sharad Kumar Sharma, General Manager, Tata Growth Shop, Tata Steel. Satish Kr. Tiwary, Chairman of IEI Jamshedpur Local Centre, delivered the welcome address and spoke about the significance of Engineers’ Day. He also introduced this year’s theme, “Deep Tech & Engineering Excellence: Driving India’s Techade.”

Delivering his keynote address, chief guest Sharad Kumar Sharma emphasized the importance of deep technology and innovation in shaping India’s future. “Deep tech and engineering excellence can be achieved when new technologies are developed right from concept to final delivery for public benefit,” he said. Sharma explained that India’s progress is being powered by three waves of growth—the first being global services, the second through Global Capability Centres (GCCs), and the third focusing on fundamental science to develop technologies for commercial and social use.

Reflecting on India’s journey, Sharma noted that technological development after independence was limited, but efforts by engineers and scientists gradually led to commercialization of new ideas that benefited society at large. “Our role as engineers is not only to innovate but to ensure these innovations reach people and transform lives,” he added.

The event was attended by 57 corporate and non-corporate members, along with distinguished engineers and guests of the city. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Seeram Madhuri, Joint Secretary of the Jamshedpur Local Centre.

Engineers’ Day has been celebrated in India since 1967 to honor the contributions of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Born in a remote village in Karnataka, Sir Visvesvaraya rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s greatest engineers and statesmen. Despite losing his father at the age of 15, he excelled in education, secured top rank at Pune Engineering College, and began his career as an Assistant Engineer in the Bombay PWD.

He went on to design the iconic sluice gates in Bombay, contributed to the development of ship ports, and as Dewan of Mysore, played a key role in establishing Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Mysore Soap Factory, and Vrindavan Gardens. Often regarded as the “Father of Indian Industry,” Sir Visvesvaraya was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955.

He is also remembered as a pioneer of economic planning in India, with works such as Planned Economy for India and Reconstructing India, which remain reference points for economic planners even today.
