Dalit representation versus development record shapes Jharkhand Rajya Sabha contest

Ranchi: The contest for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand has moved beyond simple arithmetic, with the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) highlighting the issue of Dalit representation and Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani banking on his development record to bolster his prospects.

Addressing the media at the Assembly premises, JMM central secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging that the party had never sent a Dalit representative to the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand. Describing JMM candidate Baidyanath Ram as a local leader and a Dalit candidate, he said Ram’s election would mark the first time a Dalit representative from the state reaches the Upper House.

Bhattacharya also questioned the strength of support behind the BJP-backed Independent candidate. He said filing a nomination and securing votes were two different things and asked whether BJP legislators themselves were fully committed to backing the candidate. He further challenged the BJP to support Baidyanath Ram in the interest of Dalit representation if it was genuinely committed to the cause.

Responding after filing his nomination papers, Parimal Nathwani expressed confidence about his chances despite questions over the numbers required for victory. When asked about the gap between the NDA’s legislative strength and the votes needed to secure a Rajya Sabha seat, Nathwani said he does not believe politics is only about numbers and calculations.

He said he was confident of receiving support from legislators across party lines and emphasised his long association with Jharkhand. Nathwani cited his contributions during his previous terms, including efforts related to healthcare infrastructure, social development and other public welfare initiatives in the state.

He said that if elected again, he would work with even greater commitment and energy than during his previous tenures. Nathwani also underlined that he shares cordial relations with leaders and public representatives from different political parties.

With the election approaching, the contest has increasingly come to be defined by competing narratives. While the JMM is seeking to mobilise support around the issue of Dalit representation, Nathwani is projecting his development work and cross-party goodwill as key strengths. The outcome will determine which of the two arguments resonates more strongly within the Assembly.
