Cyber crime on the rise, Jamshedpur police spread awareness

Jamshedpur: With the city going hi-tech, cyber crime cases are also on the rise. The crime has shot up this year, going by the increasing number of petitions and complaints that the police are receiving.

The police today chose to Jubilee Park and P & M Hi-Tech City Centre Mall for spreading about the measures that may protect the people from falling victim to the cyber crime.

Through large LED screen fixed in vehicles and pamplets distribution, the police carried out the awareness programme first at the Jubilee Park and then near the mall in the day.

While on the LED screen, senior SP, Anoop Birtharay and SP (city) Prabhat Kumar were shown giving tips about how to save oneself from falling victim to the ATM frauds. On the pamphlets, the police have tried to make the people aware about the cyber crime.

“The cyber crime awareness drive started in the city from today and will continue till the new year. During this period we will cover all the important public places across the city where the people will be made aware about the ways for protecting themselves from the cyber crime, sepciall the crime like fraudulent withdrawal from the ATM,” said senior SP, Anoop Birtharay.

The senior SP said as large number of people tend to visit parks and malls during this period of time, they decided to launch such drive for making the drive a success.

The internet safety tips that the police shared with the people through the special campaign were if doing netbanking do not share one’s OTP sent by the bank concerned with anyone, Keep on changing the password of ATM and net banking, keep a constant eye on the transaction with the bank through net banking and inform that bank concerned about the transaction if get any anomalous call about the ATM number or password.

Concerned over the rising hi-tech, cyber crime cases, the East Singhbhum district police have decided to strengthen its mechanism for controlling cyber crime in the steel city.

The event was especially organised for creating awareness among local residents living in the adjoining urban slums against the cyber crime, which is increasingly spreading in the society.

A senior police official pointed out that people should be aware of the recruitment processes of major companies in order to avoid being duped. They should also come forward to prefer a complaint rather than withdrawing into a shell and being secretive about the whole incident. Their complaints will help saving other people from becoming victims, he added.

Meanwhile in its latest efforts to keep crimes and criminals at bay, the East Singhbhum district police recently initiative to turn police personnel computer savvy.

In a 15-day crash-course on criminal and crime tracking network system (CCTNS), the policemen as well as the police officers are learning how to handle a computer for speedy detection of crime. But for most of the policemen, computer is an altogether new thing to get on to, the training programme has become a challenge.
