Experts Discuss Sustainable Solutions for Marine Corrosion at MCMM-2025
Intellectual Property and 4P’s Key to National Growth, says CMTI Director Dr. Nagahanumaiah
Digha/Jamshedpur: The 2nd Industrial Conclave on Maritime Corrosion Monitoring and Management (MCMM-2025) was inaugurated on February 28, 2025, as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of CSIR – National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur. The event, held at Hotel LeROI and CSIR-NML’s Marine Corrosion Research Station (MCRS) in Digha, brought together industry experts, researchers, and academicians to discuss innovative strategies for tackling marine corrosion.

Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director of CSIR-NML, welcomed the delegates and highlighted the laboratory’s contributions in metallurgy, materials science, and corrosion management. He emphasized the significance of monitoring and controlling corrosion, particularly in atmospheric and marine environments, to minimize industrial losses and enhance infrastructure longevity.

The conclave was formally inaugurated by chief guest Dr. Nagahanumaiah, Director of the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Bengaluru. Lighting the ceremonial lamp, he addressed the adverse economic impact of corrosion-related damages and the need for sustainable solutions. Stressing the importance of intellectual property creation, he outlined the 4P’s—product design, process design, people design, and production—as essential elements for national growth. He also underscored the role of the “Make in India, Make for India, Made in India” initiatives and advocated for an “Originated in India” approach to drive long-term sustainability and global competitiveness.
Technical Sessions and Industry Insights
Following the inaugural session, the conclave featured four industrial talks focused on corrosion mitigation strategies. Mr. Vijay Kulkarni from Fosroc India spoke on ‘Corrosion Mitigation Solutions for Marine Corrosion,’ while Mr. Dhruvesh Sah from Vector Corrosion Technologies (Canada) discussed techniques to safeguard marine civil infrastructure. Additionally, Dr. Sanjay Chowdhury and Mr. Soumira K. Basi from Berger Paints (India) Limited elaborated on the role of coatings and paints in protecting marine structures from corrosion.
A poster exhibition showcased CSIR-NML’s technological interventions, along with the JIGYASA program, aimed at engaging school students and industry professionals in research-based learning.
Industry Collaboration and Future Strategies
In the afternoon session, industry leaders presented real-world challenges related to corrosion and participated in a panel discussion on “Prevention Strategies for Marine Corrosion and Setting up of a Marine Corrosion Simulation Center.” The discussion focused on fostering collaboration between industries, research institutions, and policymakers to develop effective corrosion management strategies.
The conclave successfully facilitated meaningful exchanges, reinforcing the importance of advanced research, sustainable engineering solutions, and government policies in mitigating corrosion-related industrial losses. Experts reiterated the need for innovation-driven approaches to enhance the durability of maritime infrastructure and ensure long-term economic benefits.
