NML celebrates 84th CSIR Foundation Day 2025
Jamshedpur, Sep 24: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – National Metallurgical Laboratory today celebrated the 84th CSIR Foundation Day at NML Auditorium. Chief Guest of the programme, Dr. Sandip Kumar Kar, Executive Director, RDCIS, Steel Authority of India (SAIL); Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML; Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Chief Scientist and Shri Jay Shankar Sharan, Controller of Administration, CSIR-NML were present there in the dias. The function started with lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML welcomed dignitaries, NML Retirees, scientists and invitees present.

Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML said, over eight decades, CSIR has been more than an institution; it has been the knowledge backbone of modern India, a torchbearer of innovation, and a trusted partner in the nation’s journey from independence to self-reliance, and now towards Viksit Bharat@2047.
Dr. Chowdhury added, when CSIR was founded in 1942, India was still under colonial rule. The seeds of scientific research institutions were sown by visionary leaders like Sir Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, often called the “Father of Research Laboratories in India.” Their vision was simple yet profound — that science and technology must serve society. Today, CSIR is a network of 38 national laboratories, 39 outreach centres, and 3 innovation complexes, spread across the country, serving every sector of India’s economy — from agriculture and aerospace to healthcare and energy. Our present achievements are vast and diverse: Healthcare & Life Sciences; Energy & Environment; Materials & Manufacturing; Digital Technologies; Sustainability
As we celebrate 84 years, our gaze must turn towards the future. In his clarion call for Viksit Bharat @ 2047, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid out a vision of a developed India, strong in four pillars: (1) Economic Growth & Self-Reliance, (2) Social Development & Equity; (3) Sustainability & Climate Resilience; and (4) Global Leadership. CSIR have been playing a central role in realizing this dream.
Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Chief Scientist & Head, Metal Extraction & Recycling, introduced the Chief guest.
The Chief Guest Dr. Sandip Kumar Kar, representing SAIL, emphasized from an industrial perspective and in alignment with the nation’s Atmanirbhar mission, the need for collaborative efforts to address key industrial challenges. Dr. Kar highlighted areas such as raw material moisture handling and transport, energy savings in sinter operations, carbon footprint minimisation, utilisation of LD slag, Carbon Capture and utilisation in steel and ferroalloys, and the development of indigenized advanced steel technologies. He invited the research fraternity to visit SAIL plants and collaborate in strengthening and advancing the iron and steel sector towards a future-ready and self-reliant India. He also extended his best wishes to the CSIR family and NML staff for their glorious journey in nation building.
On the 84th CSIR Foundation day, Essay and Quiz competitions for the wards of employee were organized. Chief Guest, Dr. Sandip Kumar Kar gave away the awards for Essay and Drawing Competitions, meritorious students awards for CSIR-NML wards. CSIR-NML Employees who have completed 25 years in CSIR and employees who have superannuated during 30th September, 2024 to 31st August, 2025 were felicitated on the occasion.

Meritorious student awards
One time lump sum cash award of Rs. 3,000/-for securing 90% marks or above in each of minimum three science subjects in the Senior Secondary Examination (12th class) held in 2025.
Miss. Debadrita Pal scored 98.75%; Miss. Debadrita Pal scored 100% marks in Mathematics and Computer Science.
Miss. Debadrita Pal got admission in IIT BHU Varanasi and Mr. Rupam Singh got admission in IIT Kharagpur after qualifying the All India Competition 2025.
