Jamshedpur, May 23: A gang of criminals shot at and injured a 22-year-old youth as the victim had protested against the anti-social activities near his house on Road No 4 in Jawaharnagar under Mango police station area late on Sunday night.
The victim, Anupam Singh sustained serious bullet injuries and is still struggling for life at the Tata Main Hospital’s high dependency unit (HDU). Sources at Tata Main Hospital said that the victim has been operated upon successfully and was shifted to the HDU. The incident took place at Jawaharnagar in Mango during Shab-e-Barat, a festival observed late in the night.
According to local residents, about five or six anti-social elements regularly gathered in front of Anupam’s house from morning till late in the night and took drugs. They sometimes fired in the air to test their fire-arms.
“The incident took place when victim came out of his house at 10 p.m. and asked the anti-socials to stop creating noise. On being scolded, the miscreants disappeared from the spot only to reappear in front of the victim’s house,” one of the residents said. After shooting at the victim, the attackers said they know how to teach a lesson if anyone dares to oppose them.
“As soon as Anupam was shot at, his father Ramanand Singh and other neighbors rushed him to Tata Main Hospital, about 15- minutes drive from the spot. On the other hand, the incident angered the local residents, who came out of their houses to stage protests on the street,” narrated the resident.
DSP (headquarters-1) K N Mishra later went to the spot and brought in more forces from the Crime Control Room in Sakchi. Mishra has deployed four sections of police at the troubled spot.
Officer in-charge of Mango police station, Fulan Nath said they have arrested one of the attackers. He has been identified as Mohammed Shakeel (21).
