Jamshedpur: Unidentified criminals made an abortive attempt to loot cash from an ATM of State Bank of India situated at Naya Bazar Main Road in Chakulia on Saturday night. Cash worth Rs 17 lakh kept in the ATM cash box remained safe, police said.
Sources said the culprits first broke the shutter of the ATM and also opened the cover of the machine. But the culprits failed to take the cash out of the cash box.
Police said they were trying to identify the culprits on the basis of the CCTV footage obtained from the ATM.
They said the incident took place around 1.54 am when a masked man entered the ATM and covered one of the CCTV cameras with lungi. There were two ATMs in the kiosk. The one broken by the criminals had a large amount of cash. Its cash vault could not be broken, police said.
Sources said there was no security guard at the ATM when it was targeted by the criminals. Cash worth RS 22 lakh were deposited in the ATM on Saturday evening. Cops said the criminals knew well that the ATM had huge amount of cash.
Ghatsila SDPO Rajendra Dubey and the OC of Chakulia PS Nityanand Mahato reached the SBI branch to conduct a probe into the cash loot attempt. An FIR was lodged against unidentified persons late evening on the complaint of Satyam Bhol.
