Police in Cooch Behar district have launched an investigation after a four-month pregnant woman was allegedly assaulted during a village mediation meeting in Dinhata.
The victim is currently receiving medical treatment at the Dinhata Sub-District Hospital following the violent altercation.
According to the complaint, Bhabasindhu Barman, the husband of local BJP panchayat member Bina Barman, led the assault alongside several associates.
The victim stated that the group initially attacked her husband during the proceedings.
When she intervened to protect him, the assailants targeted and beat her as well.
Hospital authorities conducted an ultrasound scan on Saturday afternoon to monitor the health of the unborn child.
The victim’s family filed a formal complaint at the Dinhata police station on Friday afternoon, naming multiple individuals including the panchayat member.
Police officials confirmed that they have recorded the victim’s statement and registered a case against the accused.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly denied all allegations regarding the incident.
Shanku Sarkar, the BJP mandal president for the Sitai Assembly constituency, stated that the meeting focused on resolving an extramarital dispute.
He maintained that discussions took place peacefully in the presence of two other gram panchayat members without any physical violence.
Sarkar dismissed the charges as entirely baseless fabrications aimed at tarnishing the party’s image.
This controversy follows a similar incident reported just a week ago in the nearby Kuchni village of Dinhata.
In that previous attack, political workers targeted a Trinamool panchayat member’s brother-in-law and his eight-month pregnant wife.
That victim subsequently delivered a stillborn baby at the same sub-district hospital, causing widespread outrage across the region.
Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the earlier case, while six other named individuals remain at large.
The back-to-back violent incidents have heightened political tensions and sparked fresh debates across Cooch Behar district.
