Crackdown on illegal water connections in Jamshedpur, notices issued

Jamshedpur: The Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC) has launched a stringent campaign against illegal water supply connections and defaulters who have not paid water bills. On Thursday, the municipal team identified approximately 200 violators in Samtanagar and Daiguttu. These individuals had illegally obtained water connections but have yet to clear their dues, prompting the corporation to issue notices and warn of strict penalties.

MMC officials revealed that the campaign is part of a broader effort to ensure compliance with water usage regulations. “We have identified nearly 200 households that have outstanding water bills. Notices have been issued to them to clear their dues immediately. If they fail to comply, their water connections will be disconnected,” said an MMC official involved in the campaign.

The team is also targeting households that have not installed water meters despite having legitimate connections. “Installing a water meter is mandatory. Those who have failed to do so will be identified and instructed to comply,” the official added.

Another major focus of the campaign is the use of unauthorized motors to extract water from pipelines. The MMC has appealed to residents to remove these motors voluntarily. “If illegal motors are found during inspections, they will be confiscated, and fines will be imposed,” the official warned.

Violators may also face legal action under the Jharkhand Nagarpalika Act 2011. The corporation emphasized that such measures are necessary to prevent the misuse of water resources and ensure equitable distribution.

Some residents acknowledged the corporation’s efforts to curb illegal activities but expressed concerns about the sudden crackdown. “We understand the need for rules, but the corporation should provide adequate notice and time to comply,” said a resident of Samtanagar.

The MMC has pledged to continue the campaign in other areas to address similar violations. Officials urged residents to cooperate and adhere to regulations for a fair and sustainable water supply system.
