In view of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, the East Singhbhum district administration launched crackdown on youths indulging in open consumption of liquor and rash driving across city.
The drive which was carried out following joint directive of the East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Suraj Kumar and East Singhbhum senior superintendent of police M Tamil Vanan aimed at instilling a sense of fear amongst revelers.
According to district police records, around 183 youths were detained from different places in urban police stations across the city late last evening and were later released on personal recognizance bond from respective police stations. Youths were detained at Sakchi (28), Bistupur (10), Kadma and Sonari (nine each), Mango, Azadnagar and Ulidih (57), Sitaramdera (25), Sidhgora (25) and Golmuri (20).
An official said following directives of the deputy commissioner the drive was started. The drive aims at instilling fear amongst youths that any such acts would be dealt with sternly by the administration.
The district police along with district excise department staff also carried out a special drive against drunk driving.
The move in this regard has been taken by police after senior police officials received many complaints from residents demanding to curb the menace at public places. People also said some of the drinkers do mischievous acts and pass lewd remarks on women crossing through there.
The tiger mobiles have also been directed to launch frequent checking near liquor shops. The cops will lay down checking near different liquor shops across the town continuously.
