Court orders lockdown of Seraikela BDO Office over unpaid MNREGA wage

Jamshedpur: The Seraikela Block Development Office (BDO) was locked on Tuesday following an order issued by District Civil Judge Ashish Agarwal. The court also directed the auction of the office’s movable and immovable properties, leading to their seizure by court-appointed Nazir Gopal Kumar. The ruling was passed in connection with a misappropriation complaint filed by Chandmoni Majhian in 2024. The case dates back to 2005-06, when the complainant, a beneficiary of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), was denied her rightful wages amounting to ₹73,000 by the then BDO. After nearly two decades of struggle, the court ruled in favor of Majhian, resulting in strict action against the BDO office.

In compliance with the court’s directive, Nazir Gopal Kumar sealed the office and seized furniture, including tables, chairs, and almirahs, as well as the official vehicle (JH22C-3793).

Interestingly, this development coincides with the visit of a NITI Aayog team to the Seraikela-Kharsawan district, where Seraikela has been designated as an Aspirational Block.

Confirming the incident, BDO Yesmita Singh stated, “My office has been seized as per court orders. However, with the NITI Aayog team present, I cannot comment further on the matter at this stage.”

“ The situation underscores the judiciary’s firm stance against financial irregularities and serves as a significant warning to public officials regarding accountability in welfare scheme disbursements,” said an official.
