Jamshedpur, Dec 4: The argument from the defence side began on Monday in the fourth murder case related to the brutal mob lynching that took place in Nagadih, Bagbeda police station area, on May 18, 2017. The case, which has drawn significant attention, is being heard by the court of ADJ-1 Vimlesh Kumar Sahay. The hearings will now proceed on a day-to-day basis.
A total of 19 witnesses have already testified in the case, and while all the accused are out on bail, Mukhiya Rajaram Hansda remains in jail.
On the evening of May 18, 2017, four individuals—two brothers, Vikas and Gautam Verma, their grandmother Ramsakhi Devi, and their friend Gangesh Gupta—were brutally beaten to death by a mob in Nagadih. The villagers, accusing them of child theft, attacked them with bricks and stones, even in the presence of the police. The violence escalated when an angry mob pelted stones at the police jeep, and despite the police trying to intervene, the victims were dragged out and killed.
Ramsakhi Devi, who was also attacked, later succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at TMH.
Uttam Verma, the brother of the deceased Vikas and Gautam, filed the FIR based on his account of the tragic incident. He explained that he had been with his brother Vikas in Nagadih for work related to building toilets. After posting cleanliness septic tank posters, the mob confronted them, demanding an Aadhar card. While Uttam had his card, Vikas did not. Gautam, along with their grandmother and Gangesh, arrived at the scene shortly after. The police also reached, but the situation soon escalated. The mob, furious, attacked the police jeep and forcibly dragged the victims out, before killing them with bricks and stones.
