Couple booked for duping people in a Rs 1.25 crore fraud case

Jamshedpur: A case of fraud worth Rs 1.25 crore came to light in Kadma police station area on Monday with as many as 18 persons complaining against a couple to the SSP of East Singhbhum Anoop T Mathew. The couple has gone traceless, police said.

The complainants alleged that the couple, identified as Krishna Ghosh and her husband Kamal Ghosh, residents of Block Number 4 in Shastrinagar under Kadma PS, had taken money from them in the name of treatment and building their house in the last three years. Kamal Ghosh is a physically challenged man. The couple had made tall promises to return the money which they never did, said the complainants.

Kadma police began an investigation into the allegations after the local residents met the SSP and sought action against the couple. The officer in-charge of Kadma police station Rajdeo Singh said, �We have received several complaints from the alleged victims. Investigation is on to find out if the allegations are true or not. Action would be taken once we arrive at a prima facie conclusion.�

The residents said they found the couple missing from their residence throughout the last week. Suspecting the intentions of the couple, they finally decided to meet the SSP and lodge a complaint, said Savita Devi, one of the alleged fraud victims.

�I had given Rs 5 lakh to the couple. When I tried to contact them, I found their mobile phones switched off. The two fled from their house without informing anyone or returning their money,� said Savita Devi.

The complainants said the couple had given keys to their lenders after being pressurized by them to return their money. Many people were given the duplicate of the same key, leading to confusion and dispute among the complainants, Savita Devi said.

The complainants suffering major loss include Rita Devi (Rs 36 lakh), Saroj Devi (Rs 9 lakh), Nirmala (Rs 10 lakh), Munmun Das (Rs 2 lakh), Chandrawati Devi (Rs 2 lakh), Malti Devi (Rs 9 lakh), Monty Sengupta (Rs 5 lakh), Tula Devi (Rs 9 lakh), Atma Bhagat (Rs 9 lakh), Sanju Devi (Rs 10 lakh), Anis Kumar Singh (Rs 9 lakh) and Damyanti Devi (Rs 9 lakh).
