Confusion over CM candidate in Jharkhand, BJP considers Arjun Munda

Jamshedpur, July 18: As the Jharkhand Assembly Elections draw closer, the BJP faces uncertainty regarding its Chief Ministerial candidate. Babulal Marandi, the state president, is a natural contender, but the BJP’s disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha elections and the unity of the INDI Alliance have added to the confusion.

The defeat of former Union Minister Arjun Munda has increased the number of potential Chief Ministerial candidates within the BJP. Some BJP workers are reluctant to support Marandi. Meanwhile, Jharkhand BJP in-charge Laxmikant Vajpayee has informed the top leadership that he cannot work under the current state leadership, prompting consideration of other options.

Babulal Marandi’s situation is complicated by his merger conditions when the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) joined the BJP. Marandi had sought leadership of the Jharkhand BJP and the Chief Minister’s post if the government was formed. These conditions now seem to overshadow the BJP, which faces potential negative outcomes in the assembly elections if it adheres to or deviates from Marandi’s terms.

Recent visits by central leaders like Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Himanta Biswa Sarma have bolstered Marandi’s position. However, the INDI Alliance has decided to proceed with a single candidate, making it unlikely for the BJP to choose a non-tribal candidate. Despite Marandi’s claims, the BJP is considering tribal alternatives, with Geeta Koda being one such potential face.
