Commuters’ bane: Potholes, slush and muck traces on Jamshedpur roads

Jamshedpur: Most roads in the city, known for their immaculate maintenance have been gradually turning into reflections of the moon’s surface. Pot holes have been appearing and multiplying on most of the important thoroughfares of the city. To add to the woes of the citizens, pedestrians are finding it increasingly difficult to walk on the streets due to accumulated silt left by overflowing drains. Waterlogging on several portions of road-stretches, especially during the monsoon season do not make for a comfortable traffic scenario. In fact, these banes play a major role in enhanced conditions of traffic jams as vehicle drivers and pedestrians, in an attempt to avoid such nerve-rattlers, rush at the same time towards their destinations thereby causing traffic bottlenecks. It is not that the district administration or Tata Steel UISL authorities are unaware of these conditions. The cause of harassed citizens’ raised eyebrows is, ‘why no remedial (repair) action is being taken or when will it happen?’

Potholes on major roads are causing significant inconvenience to commuters. Half of the major roads are covered with mud and slush and commuting through (and over) these impediments calls for patience and guts, both, for pedestrians and vehicle riders. The irony of it all is that, as against the alertness and promptness shown earlier towards road cleaning and road repair of not too many yesterdays ago, no move or intent of similar promptness has been decipherable in recent times.   Kalimati Road, a major thoroughfare in the city, is a prime example, with potholes and mud making it difficult for traffic movement.

However, a ray of light has emerged with the Tata Steel UISL authorities assuring that road maintenance work would recommence immediately after the rains subsided. They have also stated that the mud and slush that have accumulated on the roads would be cleared.
