Colleges plan new job avenues for students

Jamshedpur: City-based colleges, affiliated to Kolhan University, are looking to place their students this season in new areas of job opportunities.

Karim City College placement head Anwar Shahab said they were trying to get firms from various sectors this time.
“Yes we are looking for new finance companies, banks and chartered accountancy firms from Jamshedpur and adjoining cities. Usually companies prefer to hire science and IT students. But, this year we are focusing on getting humanities students placed,” Shahab said, adding Adhunik Industries would be one of the firms visiting the campus this year.

Placement head of Jamshedpur Co-operative College R.K. Karan said that over the past few years, firms other than BPOs had evinced interest in hiring students of city cradles.

“Initially, BPOs were the only head-hunters, but these jobs have limited growth. Now, we get industries that hire science students as chemists. Companies like L&T and Usha Martin have been hiring our students. For commerce and arts students, finance and insurance sector is a prospective area. Although the market is slow, we are trying to get companies, where students will learn and grow,” he said.

“A lot of firms are approaching us for the campus interview and placements. It is really boon for the students of the city and best phase for the colleges,” said an official of Jamshedpur Women’s College.

It may be noted that from last two years the Kolhan University colleges have witnessed a boom in job offers pouring in at the campus. Now companies are picking up students directly from the colleges, which is indeed a good signal. Apart from BPO firms companies like Tata Steel and Usha Martin have also selected students from college campuses. Moreover companies like Infosys, Wipro, ICICI Prudential are regular in the campus.

Colleges like Karim City, Graduate School College for Women and Jamshedpur Cooperative College are also going to play host to the number of companies for recruitment process.

According to the college authorities, recruiters find fresh talents in the city since colleges have the caliber to fulfill the requirements of the corporate world. However, at the same time these students are available at reasonable pay, which is also one of the reasons why companies are pouring in at the campus. BPO and consulting firms easy get candidates at a salary of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month here which otherwise in not possible in metros.
