Jamshedpur, Nov 9: Winter has officially arrived in Jamshedpur, bringing with it chilly mornings and cold late-night winds. Residents have started reaching for blankets as temperatures continue to dip across the city.
According to the Meteorological Department, Jamshedpur recorded a minimum temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours. Officials have warned that the mercury may drop further in the coming days, intensifying the winter chill.
The Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave alert for Jharkhand on November 10 and 11 as temperatures are expected to drop below normal. The cold conditions will be more intense in Ranchi, Bokaro, Gumla, Hazaribagh, Khunti, Ramgarh, East and West Singhbhum, Simdega and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts. Northern districts including Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, Koderma, Latehar and Lohardaga may also experience severe cold.
The department warned that prolonged exposure to cold may cause flu, runny nose, or frostbite, advising people to stay indoors and wear warm clothing. It also stated that the cold wave may affect crops like wheat, mustard and potato, along with water supply and transportation. Weather experts said, “Morning and evening chills will increase in the coming days; people should start preparing warm clothes and bedding.”
The weather office forecast suggests that the minimum temperature could fall to 13°C on Monday (Nov 10) and further to 12°C on Tuesday (Nov 11). The gradual drop indicates that cold conditions are spreading rapidly across Jharkhand, including Jamshedpur.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for cold wave conditions in several parts of the state, including Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, Gumla, Latehar, and Lohardaga districts on November 10 and 11.
Dense fog is also expected in Jamshedpur and adjoining areas during the early morning and late-night hours, which may reduce visibility and increase the risk of road accidents. Authorities have urged commuters to drive cautiously, especially during foggy conditions.
Doctors have cautioned citizens not to ignore the sudden change in weather, as cold and fog can lead to various health problems. Common winter ailments such as cold, flu, runny nose, and even nosebleeds may increase during this period.
Experts advise that shivering is an early sign of heat loss in the body and should not be taken lightly. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures can lead to frostbite, causing pale or numb skin and, in severe cases, black blisters on fingers, the nose, or ears. Anyone experiencing such symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
The cold weather has also started affecting agricultural activities. Falling temperatures could impact Rabi crops like wheat, potatoes, and mustard, according to agricultural experts.
Additionally, dense fog may disrupt water supply, electricity, and transportation services. Drivers, especially those commuting early in the morning, have been advised to remain alert due to poor visibility on fog-covered roads.
Safety Tips for Residents
Authorities have advised citizens to take precautions during the cold spell:
- Wear warm clothes and cover yourself properly.
- Protect children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to cold.
- Avoid going out during early morning and late-night hours unless necessary.
- Drink warm beverages like tea and soup to maintain body temperature.
