City students witness thrill, scale 45 ft wall at JRD complex

Sports Climbing Championship concludes

Jamshedpur, Jan 5: Adventure buffs from the steel city had a great weekend as participants mostly the school students enjoyed climbing the 45 ft wall at JRD Tata Sports Complex as part of the two day Jamshedpur Sports Climbing Championship which concluded on Saturday.

Out of 70 students who were a part of the winter camp organized by Tata Steel from 21 to 31Dec� 13 at JRD Sports complex 54 were selected for the championship. Out of 54 participants who were a part of the preliminary round 27 were selected for the final round. In finals held on Saturday top 2 from each category of senior boys & girls and junior boys & girls.

The competition held in four different categories saw Tanisha bag the first prize in Junior girls category where Vinita was the runner up. In Senior girls category Jyoti was first while Suman Samad was second.
In Junior boys category Amitabh was first, Klayn came in second. In senior boys Monu bagged the first prize while Sonu got the second.

This was the first attempt by Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) to organize Sports Climbing Championship and with the response we got we will continue hosting such events in future, said Rajendar Singh Pal, Manager, TSAF.

After the final rounds of event prize distribution was held and Chief Guest for the function was Padma Shri Premlata Agrawal who gave the prizes to the winners and motivated the students to take up sports climbing as a career.

Premlata said that this is the first time TSAF has organized sports climbing for the students of Jamshedpur and looking at the passion with which the students have participated is immense and each student is backed by his/ her parent which is really great, added Premlata.

TSAF manager (adventure programmes) Hemant Gupta said organizing sports climbing was an attempt to revive the tough but thrilling sport. The wall, which is the only such facility in Jharkhand, is open on all days except Thursdays.
On the occasion Instructors of camp including Mohan Rawat, Rajinder, Madhumita, Babulal and others were present.
