New Delhi: Former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren along with AJSU Party supremo and former Deputy Chief Minister (CM) Sudesh Mahato along with, have landed in Delhi on Monday to meet Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The purpose of the visit is to discuss seat sharing for the upcoming assembly elections in the state later this year.
According to reliable sources close to Champai, the former chief minister is in the national capital for two days and will be meeting with top leaders of the saffron brigade to negotiate seat sharing with the BJP.
“After the meeting, it will be clear whether Champai Da will be forming a new party or contesting the election on a BJP ticket,” said sources close to Champai.
Sources also revealed that Champai has put forward two demands to join the BJP: the Chief Minister’s position and the implementation of the 1932 domicile policy in the state. It was added that during the last meeting, the BJP had accepted Champai’s first demand.
However, when speaking to the media, Champai neither confirmed nor denied his meeting with Amit Shah regarding joining the party. “I’m here for a few days. You all will know very soon,” said Champai.
In another major political development, AJSU Party supremo Sudesh Mahto met BJP top leaders to discuss seat sharing for the 2024 assembly elections. According to sources within the AJSU, Mahto is expected to demand at least 30 seats for his party. However, sources from the saffron brigade told The Avenue Mail that six seats would be offered to the AJSU.
However, Mahto talking to media after meeting top BJP leaders did not disclose the number of seats his party will be contesting elections with.
“AJSU is part of the NDA. It does not matter how many seats AJSU will be contesting on. Since we are contesting together, we will be responsible for all 81 seats,” said AJSU supremo.
On asked about Champai, Mahto did not mention if the former CM was in the meeting or not. Mahto said, “Champai Da is a very senior leader. If he joins the NDA, his guidance will always matter.”
In 2014, the AJSU contested eight seats, and in 2019, it decided to contest the elections independently.
