Only 48% of Trains on Time in Chakradharpur Division

Jamshedpur: Train delays are worsening across the Chakradharpur railway division. Official figures show a troubling trend for 2025. Currently, only 48 percent of train services are operating on schedule. This crisis is disrupting daily life for thousands of commuters in the region.

Major Routes Facing Heavy Delays

Key routes are struggling with significant timing issues. Passengers on the following lines report delays of 25 to 30 percent:

  • Tatanagar – Howrah
  • Tatanagar – Kharagpur
  • Patna – Tatanagar

Commuters traveling between Chakradharpur and Tatanagar face the worst of it. These trips often take three to five hours. This far exceeds the original travel time. Consequently, long-distance trains frequently arrive up to two hours late.

The Human Cost of Delays

Overcrowded platforms and missed connections have become a daily routine. As a result, passengers are facing extra expenses for hotels and ticket rebookings. Many travelers also report lost wages and missed medical appointments.

Furthermore, commuters allege that freight trains receive priority over passenger services. This often leads to express and local trains being halted for long periods. Even premium services like the Jan Shatabdi and Gitanjali Express now face frequent rescheduling.

Official Response: Wildlife and Maintenance

Aditya Chaudhary, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM), addressed these concerns. He stated that authorities are closely monitoring all movements.

“There is continuous monitoring of train movement on the division’s lines. However, due to line improvement works and operational constraints, trains sometimes face delays.”Aditya Chaudhary, Senior DCM

Additionally, Chaudhary highlighted unique safety challenges. He explained that when elephants stray onto the tracks, trains must stop for safety. Sometimes, services are halted for up to five hours. This inevitably affects the punctuality of the entire division.

Demands for Better Scheduling

Railway officials also pointed to heavy freight traffic as a major factor. While freight brings in essential revenue, passengers are demanding a better balance.

Commuters are now calling for:

  1. Dedicated freight slots to reduce congestion.
  2. Improved real-time monitoring to prevent cascading delays.
  3. Measurable improvements instead of repeated official assurances.

Rail connectivity is the backbone of mobility in this region. Therefore, punctual service is a necessity for the public.
