Jamshedpur, Oct 30: A five-member central investigation team from Delhi and Ranchi carried out a surprise inspection at the MGM Medical College and Hospital Blood Bank in Jamshedpur on Wednesday, following reports of irregularities at the Chaibasa Blood Bank.

The team, which included experts from the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) and the Jharkhand State Blood Cell under the National Health Mission (NHM), reviewed records, stock registers, and digital data entries to assess compliance with national blood safety standards.

According to sources, the inspection focused on verifying blood collection, storage, and distribution records.

Officials cross-checked manual registers with entries on the e-RaktKosh portal, the government’s centralized digital platform for blood bank management.

Discrepancies between the physical stock and the online records reportedly drew the team’s attention.

Inspectors directed MGM authorities to ensure real-time data updates, proper documentation, and strict adherence to operational protocols.

They also examined storage units, refrigeration facilities, and safety measures related to blood transfusion and component separation.

Hospital officials said the central team interacted with the blood bank in-charge, laboratory staff, and the hospital superintendent, seeking explanations on data inconsistencies and procedural gaps.

A senior NHM official, part of the inspecting delegation, stated that the visit was part of a statewide audit to ensure transparency and accountability in blood bank operations.

“The objective is to build public trust and ensure that every unit of blood is properly tracked from donor to recipient,” the official said.

The findings from the inspection will be compiled into a detailed report for submission to the Union health ministry and the Jharkhand health department.

Officials indicated that further checks could be carried out across other districts in the coming days, as authorities intensify scrutiny of blood bank management systems statewide.
