Jamshedpur, Nov. 30: Concerned over rising cases youths indulging in indecent acts in parks like Jubilee Park and other public places plans are being made to install CCTV cameras in those places.
The East Singhbhum district police have embarked on the fourth phase of installing CCTV cameras to increase vigil and surveillance in the city. In the first and second phases, 14 cameras, in each phase, were installed, while 22 new CCTV cameras were installed in the third phase. In the fourth phase, they plan to install 35 cameras.
Apart from this, Jusco has already set up about half-a-dozen additional lamp-posts across the sprawling Jubilee Park and is identifying more spots to install the same.
Notably, after sunset the atmosphere of Jubilee Park gets completely changed. The entire park becomes a heaven for the lovers who turn up with their girl-friends to seek corners for spending intimate time in the darkness.
Sources revealed that before deciding to close the park three hours earlier and installing halogen lights, the officials from the district administration, Jusco and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) had conducted survey of the park from evening till the 11 p.m. when park is closed.
After the survey the two important decisions were taken,” said a senior official in the district administration on the condition of anonymity. He pointed out the change of timing of park’s opening and closure will not affect the morning walkers as it will remain opened from 5 a.m. like before.
Senior superintendent of police, Anoop T Mathew said during winter it becomes dark outside after 5.30 p.m. He said keeping the rush in view the district police also ensures that adequate police men and police women are posted in the park for the visitors’ security.
Officials said that the city is going to have as many as 22 such cameras to be installed on the important roads shortly. He said that a meeting was held with the officials of Jusco. The company has agreed to grant land and power for the cameras. He further added that the gadgets will be installed atop overhead bill-boards on the roads and also the important areas so as enable the cameras to cover the overall view of roads of any given place.
“The project for installation of CCTV cameras is being worked out jointly by a private firm and the district police, and the process of installation of the gadgets has started. This is the third phase of the project. The CCTV cameras have helped to instill fear amongst the law breakers. Itis also helping us to controlling traffic and identifyingof errant riders involved in accidents, noted a police official.
According to him, the roads in important localities like Bistupur, Sakchi and Golmuri are being given priority of the CCTV camera installation and in the later stage the localities with lesser civic importance will be selected for the same. The camera will help in easily identifying people involved in anti-social activities in the area. The police department will ensure that the large number of CCTV cameras installed to monitor traffic offences is incorporated into the new system.
It is a testing time for the city police in the wake of a spurt in crimes like snatching, burglary and group clashes in the city. Taking lesson from the past incidents the district administration is not ready to take any chance on the security front.
